It seems difficult to judge just how good BYU was a year ago. With impressive wins against Texas and Boise State, those wins were countered by losses to Virginia and Utah. Weather delays were an issue with the Virginia and Texas games. The opener in Charlottesville was muddy, slow, and a low scoring affair which allowed the underdog Cavaliers a better chance to stay in it. So I give the Cougars a break in that one. With the Texas game, there begs the question whether or not the Longhorns even cared. After a long delay, Texas was sluggish and allowed Taysom Hill to set records against them. 259 rushing yards as a quarterback is pretty insane. If Hill was able to do better than 9 for 26 passing, it could've been even worse. The Longhorns did not allow another QB to rush for over 100 yards in any other regular season game. So not to take away from the great ability of Taysom Hill, but there's evidence of a Texas team who didn't give 100%. Look for the rematch this season to be a completely different game in Austin. The last four games of the schedule shouldn't be an issue for BYU, so it really depends how they deal with a challenging first two months of the season.

Also, it's a virtual lock that BYU will play Cincinnati in the Miami Beach Bowl. The bowl game is tied to an American Conference team to play vs. the Cougars. Along with the fact BYU plays three American Conference teams, there aren't many options for the bowl to pick another team to avoid a season rematch. East Carolina is another option, but an outside chance. It will be very interesting to see how the future of BYU plays out due to their inability at the moment to convince the Big 12 they belong. Winning at Texas would go a long way to strengthening that idea, but it's a tough task. Only time will tell.
